Bearing a resemblance to Mungo Jerry’s “In The Summertime,” the song focuses a little more on the woes the dreamer faces to hang out with the likes of viral stars like DC Young Fly. “California” also highlights the desire for a woman to find tranquility in the sunny paradise by any means possible. On “Have Some Fun” the artist wants us all to leave hate in the fiery trash can that was 2016 and “have some time for one another” with a joyful similarity to Funkadelic’s “Good To Your Earhole” record. The feeling is mutual on Awaken with rap-free tracks like “Terrified” and “Riot,” as Gambino screams between callings of love, passion and togetherness. “Not having a name for that, though just having a feeling. “I remember hearing a Funkadelic scream and being like, ‘Wow, that’s sexual and it’s scary,’” he said. ’” The singer/rapper also told Billboard that Awaken would focus on tone rather than pre-written material. “My dad used to ‘Eddie Hazel is the best guitarist ever, he’s better than Jimi. “ Maggot Brain is one of my favorites ever,” a baby-faced Gambino said to Amoeba in 2013. While these blurred lines make this album a little hard to follow, “Awaken, My Love!” proves his versatility as a rapper turning over a new leaf.He’s also made it known with several outlets his deeply rooted love for the P-Funk legends like Funkadelic and Sly and The Family Stone. “Childish Gambino gets definite props for pushing the envelope and refusing to operate within any genre confinements on this refreshing 49-minute trip through the funkadelic 1970s. Like the cosmic soul it emulates, the atmosphere is lush, full of period ambiance worthy of a high-end television set.” – Pitchfork The album’s production is majestic, aiming squarely for the cosmos depicted on its striking cover artwork. In paying homage to heroes, he even hits upon some of the genuine emotional connection that has often been missing from his music. “His recently released “Awaken, My Love!” is his hardest left turn yet, ditching rap wholesale in favor of funk worship, and the result is his most enjoyable project to date.
